Free pie and discounted pizza — March 14

Each year, a slew of restaurants offer freebies and discounted fare on “National Pi Day,” March 14.

Why on that day? Because the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter — a mathematical constant that’s roughly 3.14 — is known as “pi,” and that special number is celebrated on the 14th day of the third month of the year, or 3/14.

Some Pi Day discounts are for pizza pies. In most of those cases, you will pay $3.14 for your pizza. But other deals are freebies, usually for “pie,” the fruit-filled dessert.

Free kids workshop at Lowes — March 18

If your child, grandchild or another kid in your life enjoys craft projects, sign them up for a complimentary Cardinal Garden Ornament Workshop at Lowe’s.

Your little one will learn basic building skills while following steps to create a unique item they can proudly display in the garden. The workshop will be held in-store from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 18.

Free Rita’s Italian ice — March 20

Celebrate the first day of spring by visiting your local Rita’s shop for a cool, free Italian ice on March 20.

The Italian ice and custard chain’s tradition of giving out the treats to signal the change of seasons has been going on for more than 25 years. Rita’s says it is just their way of “kicking off the season — and spreading a little happiness.” Learn more.

Free pie at Village Inn and Bakers Square — Wednesdays

Pie lovers, rejoice! Dine at participating Village Inn or Bakers Square restaurants throughout the year, and you’ll get a complimentary slice of pie.

Times for the promotion — known as Free Pie Wednesday — vary by location at Village Inn, but are usually 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and you need to buy an entree to qualify.

Bakers Square offers the deal from 10 a.m. to close, and you’ll need to order an entree and a drink to qualify there.

Some varieties of pie may be excluded from the deal.

Free COVID-19 tests — ongoing
