This winter, Americans once again will have access to free at-home COVID-19 testing kits.
The Biden administration announced on Dec. 15 that all households are eligible for free at-home tests. You can order four free testing kits per household at the government’s official COVID.gov website.
Those who do not have access to the internet can order their tests by calling 1-800-232-0233 (TTY 1-888-720-7489) between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. EST on weekdays, and between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST on weekends.
The kits will begin to ship starting the week of Dec. 19, with additional shipments continuing in the weeks ahead.
If you want your free testing kits, it is probably wise to order them quickly. The White House is stressing that the kits will be available through a “limited round of ordering.”
According to a White House announcement:
“In the absence of Congress providing additional funding for the nation’s COVID-19 response, the Administration has acted with its limited existing funding to add more at-home COVID-19 tests to the nation’s stockpile and support this round of ordering ahead of continued increases in COVID-19 cases.”
Last winter, the federal government also authorized the shipment of free COVID-19 testing kits to households. However, the program was suspended in September due to a lack of funding.
The Biden administration says it is also helping to fight back against COVID-19 by ensuring that:
- More than 15,000 free community COVID-19 testing sites are available nationwide
- Medicare covers all over-the-counter COVID-19 tests
