Salmon sold at BJ’s Wholesale Club stores in seven East Coast states has been recalled as officials say the fish could be contaminated with Listeria.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the recall covers lot 3896 of Wellesley Farms Farm-Raised Atlantic Salmon sold in BJ’s Wholesale Club stores in seven states between Jan. 31 and Feb. 7.
“The presence of Listeria monocytogenes was found through a sample collected randomly by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Slade Gorton & Co., Inc, is investigating how the contamination occurred and taking steps to keep it from happening again,” the recall said.
Officials said there have been no illnesses reported in connection with the recalled salmon. The FDA said BJ’s Wholesale Club is contacting members who may have purchased the recalled product.
Slade Gorton & Co., the company behind the salmon, told USA TODAY over email that they had no further comment on the ongoing recall.

Where was the salmon sold?
According to the FDA, the Wellesley Farms Farm-Raised Atlantic Salmon in 2-lb bags was sold at BJ’s Wholesale Club stores in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
Officials said the salmon’s UPC code is 888670025963 and can be found on the reverse of the bag.
What are the symptoms of listeria poisoning?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, listeria poisoning is a foodborne bacterial infection typically caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. The illness can be dangerous or life-threatening, particularly to older adults, those with weakened immune systems and pregnant women.
Per the CDC, symptoms of listeria poisoning include:
- Fever
- Muscle aches
- Headache
- Stiff neck
- Confusion
- Loss of balance
- Convulsions
- Diarrhea
- Other gastrointestinal symptoms
- Miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery and/or life-threatening infection of newborn infants
- Death
