Thieves. You’re all thieves.
That’s probably what any hotelier thinks who reads the latest survey from Passport-Photo.online, anyway. The photo app boldly asked more than 1,000 Americans what they steal from hotels.
And 87% admit they’ve taken something from a hotel at least once before. More than a quarter say they do every single time.
Following are the most popular products to purloin on your next vacation. (Assuming you don’t mind risking an extra charge on your bill.)
Towels
Percentage of people who say they steal this item: 35.2%
Many people (30%) justify their petty thefts by claiming they already paid for the item in the price of the room. And apparently, quite a few people think that includes the towels.
Other people (29%) say they steal for sentimental reasons — and what better way to remember that shower you took on your 2018 summer vacation than a monogrammed towel?
Soap dish
Percentage of people who say they steal this item: 35.1%
Another potentially surprising thing people run off with is the dish the cutely arranged hotel soaps rest on.
Yes, not the soaps themselves — although nearly a third of people grab those — but the tray underneath them.
People are equally likely (26%) to say they do it because they “get a rush of naughtiness” or that they think it’s funny.
Mini pillow
Percentage of people who say they steal this item: 34.2%
While full-size pillows may be out of bounds for some, smaller ones seem to be fair game.
The more obvious the item, the more likely you may be to get into trouble. The survey found 28% of thieves were prosecuted while 31% were blacklisted from the property. Most people end up paying for the items, though a lucky handful emerge unscathed.
The rest of the top 10
Here are the other items the survey said people tend to steal most often:
- Tissue box: 33.9%
- Umbrella: 33.2%
- Bottle opener: 32.6%
- Toothpaste: 32.5%
- Soap: 32.4%
- Bible: 31.7%
- Cushion: 30.4%
These are just the most common items. The survey says 21% of people even steal artwork or decorations.
